As communities prepare for Canada’s 2026 wildfire season, the historic 2023 season offers important context. Natural Resources Canada reports that more than 6,800 wildland fires burned over 14.6 million hectares and forced more than 230,000 people to evacuate.[1] Wildfire smoke also does not stay near the flames—it can travel thousands of kilometres and affect communities far from the fire zone.[2]

What makes wildfire smoke dangerous?

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of gases, water vapour, and particles. Health Canada identifies fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as the main health risk from wildfire smoke.[2]

These particles are too small to see with the naked eye and are associated with a range of health effects. Short-term smoke exposure may cause:[2]

  • irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and sinuses;
  • headaches, a mild cough, or increased mucus;
  • wheezing or shortness of breath; and
  • worsening symptoms of asthma or other respiratory conditions.

During heavy smoke conditions, everyone can be affected. Infants and children, older adults, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and people with heart or lung conditions may face a higher risk.[2]

When should you seek medical help?

If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, heart palpitations, or a persistent severe cough, contact a health-care provider or seek urgent medical attention.[2]

Chapter 02

First, check the air—not just the sky

Wildfire smoke levels can change significantly within a few hours. Fine-particle concentrations may remain elevated even when you cannot see thick smoke.

Before going outside, check Canada’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), local air-quality alerts, and emergency notices. The AQHI provides local conditions and forecasts to help people understand the health risks associated with air quality.[3] When air quality is poor, consider these steps:

  1. Reduce, reschedule, or cancel outdoor activities.
  2. Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise or physical work.
  3. Keep doors and windows closed when it is safe to do so, while prioritizing staying cool during extreme heat.
  4. Use a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles.
  5. In a vehicle, close the windows and temporarily set the ventilation system to recirculation mode.
  6. Monitor local wildfire alerts and evacuation orders.

These exposure-reduction steps—including limiting time outdoors, keeping indoor air cleaner, and using vehicle recirculation appropriately—are reflected in current Government of Canada wildfire-smoke guidance.[4]

Evacuation orders always come first

If local authorities tell you to evacuate, leave immediately.[4] No mask can replace evacuation or protect you from flames, extreme heat, or an oxygen-deficient environment.

Chapter 03

When you must go outside, fit matters

The Public Health Agency of Canada advises that a well-fitting and properly worn NIOSH-certified N95 respirator—or an equivalent respirator such as a KN95 or KF94—can help reduce exposure to fine particles when you must spend time outdoors during a smoke event.[5]

Filter material matters, but air will follow the path of least resistance. Gaps around the nose, cheeks, or chin can reduce real-world protection.

Check these points before wearing a respirator

  • It fully covers your nose, mouth, and chin
  • The nosepiece follows the shape of your nose
  • The straps are secure without being loose
  • You do not feel obvious leaks around the edges
  • The filter is not wet, damaged, or visibly dirty
  • Breathing resistance has not noticeably increased

Facial hair can interfere with the seal between a respirator and the skin. Government guidance also advises replacing a respirator when it becomes dirty, damp, or damaged.[5]
